FEURIO!

2024
Super8 - Black&White
70 solarized frames extract from a single Super8 roll

"Matérialité focuses on ongoing research and creative processes. On this occasion, we are revealing FEURIO! a very first restitution of the work of Frédéric D. Oberland, transdisciplinary artist in residence at La Kabine - Centre de l’image in 2024-2025 in Arles. His technical, aesthetic and narrative questions resonate with those of the artists and researchers exhibited at the Fondation Manuel Rivera Ortiz until the end of December. With his Super8 camera in hand, Frédéric D. Oberland captures here, among other scenes of fraternity, intimacy, chaos or struggle, a silhouette dancing around the flames."

2024 Oct 11th -> Dec 29th - "Matérialité" @ Fondation Manuel Rivera Ortiz, Arles (FR)

"Frederic D. Oberland's artistic career began with cinema and moving images, before he left the Fémis - Ecole nationale supérieure des métiers de l'image et du son to concentrate on music and photography. However, by breaking down moving scenes frame by frame, he returns with FEURIO! to his first love, reconnecting with the dynamics of cinema while revealing the underlying frameworks of photography and its technical processes, blending the two disciplines in a poetic exploration of movement, space and time. Through his approach to artistic research and experimentation, Frédéric D. Oberland invites us to redefine the frontiers of photography. His work in image post-production introduces the idea of a material dimension into his work. Negatives and grain, in particular, allow new forms of imagery to emerge, where the invisible and the suggested themselves become tangible, as well as characters in their own right in his dreamlike, hallucinatory universe. The sequencing of images and the erasure of faces are not intended to dehumanize the subjects, but rather to tell a universal story whose blurred, fragmented contours are reminiscent, if not of cinema, then of drawing and comics. Frédéric D. Oberland is in residence at La Kabine-Centre de l'image as part of the production of his first monographic book, to be published by Sun/Sun."
